Advice to Send New Grads Soaring

Advice to Send New Grads Soaring

As we bid farewell to another school year and celebrate graduates going off to college or entering the work force, I was thinking about good advice to give out that has served me well over the years. What do you tell a recent graduate in order to prepare them for the great big world before them? Don't forget to eat. Don't forget to wash your sheets. Don't forget to call home! I'm sure we could make a laundry list of advice – including tips for doing the laundry.

What else? What character advice can we give to ready a young adult for success? How about this simple tip: be kind. You may have heard the saying, "You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar." How true that is. Who wants to work or live or be around someone who is sour, who is bitter, who is mean? On the flipside, it is absolutely amazing how far you can go with people, in interviews, in careers, in love and friendship with a positive attitude. By being helpful, encouraging, thoughtful, grateful, generous; people can't help but be impressed and drawn in by you.

They call it a "winning smile" for a reason because a smile can get your more wins in life, so my advice is to show yours off more often. My sincerest congratulations to those of you who are graduating or celebrating a graduate this month!
