Despite their symbolic significance, the cherry trees face ongoing threats from weather, flooding, and heavy foot traffic. To ensure their annual springtime bloom, they require year-round care, with approximately one hundred trees needing replacement each year. However, the cost of maintenance exceeds federal budget allocations, underscoring the importance of public-private partnerships in their preservation.
The Trust for the National Mall proudly partners with the National Park Service to steward these beloved trees. Through initiatives like the Cherry Tree Endowment Fund, private donations supplement public resources, safeguarding the trees for future generations. Without proper care, these symbols of friendship and diplomacy would suffer and cease to flourish.
With a financial goal of $3.5 million, the Trust invites individuals who share a commitment to environmental sustainability to become ambassadors for the cause. By adopting a cherry blossom tree, supporters can play a direct role in preserving this cultural landscape and upholding its legacy of unity and goodwill.
