DC galleries are celebrating Art Museum Day 2014 on Sunday May 18 with free admission. Or, for the Smithsonian art museums that are already free, there will be special tours, movies and talks.
One of the coolest events is a screening of the 1925 silent film Ben Hur at the National Portrait Gallery with a live accompaniment by pianist and composer Andrew Simpson. The movie rolls at 1 pm with free tickets handed out beginning at 12:30.
The National Museum of Women in the Arts will be free Sunday from noon to 5 pm. The museum is pictured above (2008/Wikipedia Commons)
The Freer Gallery will host a tea tasting related to its exhibit "Chigusa and the Art of Tea."
The National Museum of African Arts will offer discounts at the museum store from 1 to 3 pm.
And while the Phillips Collection won't be free, there are interactive tours, discounted items at the gift shop and a special sparkling cocktail at the cafe.
