Merriam-Webster has added more than 150 new words and definitions to their Collegiate Dictionary in 2014, they announced on Monday, and it shouldn't be too big of a surprise that some of those words are related to technology and social media.
Included in the new bunch of words are hashtag, selfie and tweep (a person who uses Twitter), as well as crowdfunding, big data and gamification. But not all the new words are necessarily modern. Steampunk, for example, is "science fiction dealing with 19th-century societies dominated by historical or imagined steam-powered technology."
Other new words, which come from kitchens or restaurants, include the soup known as pho, the chicken-duck-turkey combo turducken and the dressed up French fries known as poutine.
