Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's separation received a lot of attention last week, but mostly because of the way it was described as a "conscious uncoupling," a term that no one had ever heard before.

The term is actually not something that Gwyneth came up with. It was coined by marriage and family therapist Katherine Woodward Thomas. She appeared on the Today show this morning (Monday) to explain exactly what a "conscious uncoupling" is. First, she made it clear that she doesn't even know Gwyneth and Chris and assumes they learned of the phrase taking one of her online courses. But regardless, she's thrilled that the term has been brought to the general public.

She explains, "conscious uncoupling is a breakup that's characterized by goodwill, by generosity, by respect."
