The Real Reason People Wear Sunglasses

With a lot of people hitting the beach this weekend for Memorial Day you are likely to see plenty of folks wearing sunglasses to protect their eyes from the glares of the sun. But it turns out there is a nasty side effect to wearing those shades.

A new study out of the University of British Columbia has discovered that people who are wearing sunglasses are more likely to stare at sexually provocative images because they think people aren’t looking. So, next time you feel like someone is watching you at the beach, it’s likely true.

The study looked at 56 subjects who were given either sunglasses or glasses with transparent lenses. They were then shown a series of photos of runway models, all the while being watched by a monitor. They were then asked to swap glasses and view the pictures again. In the end, scientists found that participants tended to ogle at the images when they had the sunglasses on.

“People spontaneously looked more and for longer at the sexually provocative images when their eyes were camouflaged by sunglasses," the researchers said, noting it suggests people are “profoundly sensitive” to what others may think of their looking behavior. Well, yeah!
