Stevie Wonder: 'Superstition' (1972) - A funky, irresistible groove that showcases Stevie's musical genius.

Elvis Presley: 'Heartbreak Hotel' (1956) - The King's signature song that made him a legend.

Nirvana: 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' (1991) - The grunge masterpiece that defined a generation's angst.

The list cites a University of London breakdown of what makes for a great pop song... including these three features...

  • Phrasing: The longer a singer holds a note or lyric, the more likely we are to listen. Think of Freddy Mercury's powerhouse vocals.
  • Chorus: Three different musical pitches appear to be the magical number to make a song's chorus memorable.
  • Strong vocals: Powerful male vocals seem to trigger the greatest emotional responses
