MYM:14-Year-Old Scientist Creates Skin Cancer-Fighting Soap

In a remarkable feat of scientific innovation and social responsibility, 14-year-old Heman Bekele, a freshman at Woodson High School in Northern Virginia, spent his summer working on a soap that combats low-grade skin cancer. His creation, the Skin Cancer-Treating Soap (SCTS), represents a significant leap in making skin cancer treatment more accessible and affordable.

Heman's motivation was clear: he aimed to level the playing field for skin cancer treatment worldwide, making it equitable for everyone. Skin cancer, a prevalent and potentially life-threatening condition, often involves expensive and complex medical interventions. Heman's vision was to change that by creating a practical solution that could empower individuals to effectively address low-grade skin cancer.

The SCTS, a groundbreaking skincare product, contains a unique ingredient—dendritic cells. These specialized immune cells are pivotal in safeguarding the skin and fighting cancer. By infusing the SCTS with dendritic cells, Heman's soap takes a novel approach to skin cancer treatment, one that can be applied by individuals themselves.

Heman's impressive work not only earned him recognition but also secured the title of "America's Top Young Scientist" in the esteemed 3M Young Scientist Challenge. His accomplishment came with a generous $25,000 prize, further emphasizing the significance of his research.

Looking ahead, Heman has ambitious plans for his skin cancer-fighting soap. Over the next five years, he intends to bring the SCTS to the market, ensuring that it reaches those in need. Additionally, he aspires to establish a nonprofit organization that will enable broader access to this groundbreaking product.

Beyond his innovative contribution to healthcare, Heman's future holds promise. He envisions a career in either the biomedical or electrical engineering field, where his passion for science and his commitment to making a difference will undoubtedly continue to shine.
