The holiday season is here, which means 2023 is coming to a close soon and a new poll is all about a subject many aren’t ready to think about yet: New Year’s resolutions. The survey of 2-thousand U.S. adults looks at how Americans are approaching their goals for 2024, and it seems many aren’t in any hurry.
What’s the best way to make those resolutions stick? For two in five the answer is to “start small.” More people would also rather kick theirs off gradually (40%) than jump in headfirst (18%). Americans also prefer making long-term goals (42%) over short-term ones (27%), because they can take their time reaching them (62%) and the results tend to be bigger and better (57%). But those who like short-term goals more say they’ve had more success reaching them (62%) and that they’re usually simpler (55%).
According to the survey:
- The easiest New Year’s resolutions to achieve are practicing better hygiene (62%), drinking more water (55%) and working on flexibility, like being able to touch your toes (41%).
- New Year’s goals should be reached by summer, or take an average of around five months.
- Three-quarters (75%) set at least one resolution every year and 83% of them say they’ve had success with theirs over the years.
- The top wellness-related resolutions Americans are focusing on for 2024 include weight management (53%), hair and nail health (46%), fitness and strength (45%), immune health (45%) and hormonal health (41%).
- The top things keeping people from achieving their New Year’s resolutions include the expense (53%), busy schedule (53%), not enough support from loved ones (52%), lack of motivation (46%) and getting discouraged with a lack of results (36%).
