Potomac, MD Church Receives Prestigious Legacy Award

In the heart of Potomac, Maryland, stands the Scotland African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, a testament to the unwavering commitment of a local community dedicated to preserving African American history in Montgomery County. Erected with care by its members in 1924 in the vibrant Black community of Scotland, this wooden-framed church on Seven Locks Road evolved to become a pivotal symbol in the county's civil rights movement and now holds the esteemed status of a state historic site.

The journey of this historic church took a challenging turn in 2019 when a devastating flood threatened its existence. Remarkably, the Scotland AME Zion Church emerged as the sole surviving historic building in the Scotland community, solidifying its significance in the region.

As we approach the MLK holiday, the church and its community members are basking in the glow of a special recognition—the 2024 Legacy Award for civic engagement and community impact. Bestowed by the international celebration honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this prestigious award acknowledges their remarkable efforts.

The spotlight shines on their "Second Century Project," a visionary initiative aimed at not only restoring and fortifying the church against future storms but also expanding its capacity to serve both its members and the broader community. The church and its congregation are set to be honored at The Willard Hotel on Sunday, marking a momentous occasion that celebrates resilience, community spirit, and a commitment to preserving the legacy of African American history.
