A Missouri mom shared a note she left for her son's babysitter, presenting a unique chore list with optional tasks and corresponding payments.
The note invited the babysitter to relax and enjoy TV time but also offered opportunities for additional earnings through various chores. Tasks ranged from $3 for vacuuming the couch to $15 for cleaning the refrigerator, giving the babysitter the autonomy to choose based on interest and availability.
Ivan's caption underlined her appreciation for whichever choice the babysitter made, whether opting for the chores or not. The TikTok video quickly gained traction, amassing 1.5 million views and over 1,700 comments, predominantly supportive of Ivan's approach.
Many lauded the initiative for providing the babysitter with autonomy and valuing her time and effort. Some shared personal experiences, expressing how such acknowledgment would have made them feel cherished and respected in their roles.
However, a subset of viewers raised concerns regarding fair compensation, suggesting that some tasks were undervalued considering their scope and effort required.
Responding to the feedback, Ivan posted follow-up videos addressing questions and clarifications. She revealed that she paid the babysitter, a local high-school student, $75 for four hours of childcare, during which her son was asleep upon the babysitter's arrival.
Ivan elaborated on the breakdown of the babysitter's final payment, highlighting that the babysitter earned $115 for her services and completed four $10 tasks, resulting in an hourly rate of $28.75. Ivan emphasized that the babysitter enthusiastically engaged in the optional chores, demonstrating appreciation for the opportunity.
In subsequent interactions, Ivan expressed optimism that the optional-chore list could become a widespread practice, given the overwhelmingly positive response from fellow mothers. She believes it could redefine norms surrounding babysitter compensation and acknowledgment of their contributions.
