ABC7's Eileen Whelan Shares Her Visionaries of the Year Fundraiser

Why This Campaign is Personal to Eileen's Family

This campaign holds a special place in our hearts. My husband, Derek, lost his beloved mom, Terri Biss, to Leukemia in February 2014. I had the privilege of meeting my mother-in-law, but it was only for four brief months. Witnessing her decline was heart-wrenching, and seeing my husband lose his mom was even harder.

Our three-year-old, Charlie, and our nephew, Liam, never had the chance to meet Grandma Biss. However, we keep her memory alive through stories, pictures, and now, through this fundraising campaign.

We owe a heartfelt thank you to our cousin, Jamie Kennedy, for painting a beautiful picture of Liam and Charlie with Grandma Biss. It serves as a touching reminder of the angel watching over us.

Terri was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) in 2011. Her journey through treatment included chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, followed by a year-long quarantine—long before quarantine became a common term. Experimental treatments extended her life, but ultimately, they weren't enough to overcome the cancer. With your support, we can fund research to give more patients a fighting chance to beat cancer and thrive.

Notice the Dunkin' Donuts coffee tumbler on Terri's grave? The boys also left a little construction truck—they're obsessed with their trucks! Terri, like many in Massachusetts, had two Dunkin coffees every day. That's why we've named our team Dunkin’ Cancer.

Most of us know someone who has been affected by cancer. Leukemia isn’t the only focus of LLS-funded research. Many groundbreaking discoveries have come from LLS research, benefiting patients with various cancers and diseases. LLS-supported research has provided insights into cancer biology relevant to bone, brain, breast, kidney, liver, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, stomach, and skin cancers. Additionally, LLS research has supported treatments for diabetes, lupus, nephritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis. This is why we proudly say:
