Olympic athletes must adhere to numerous rules both in and out of competition. With the Olympic Village returning to Paris for the 2024 Summer Games, many changes have been implemented since the small wooden huts of 1924.
Housing Rules and Zones Athletes must live with their country's team within designated zones in the Olympic Village. Team USA, for example, occupies the Bastille cluster, consisting of four buildings with 600 individual sleeping rooms. Delegations manage their own rules, and each country's housing allocation depends on the size of its team.
Entry Restrictions Access to the Olympic Village is tightly controlled. Only athletes, team leaders, staff, medical personnel, and sometimes security are allowed entry. Friends and family are prohibited from entering, although nursing mothers can bring their infants to a designated nursery.
Roommate Assignments Teams decide on roommates based on the size and needs of their squads. Minors are generally roomed with other minors, with strict guidelines and necessary permissions for any exceptions.
Quiet Hours and Alcohol Ban To ensure rest and focus, quiet hours are enforced from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Alcohol is strictly prohibited for Team USA athletes within the village, emphasizing a high-performance environment.
Customizable Mattresses Athletes can customize their mattresses to ensure proper rest. The cardboard beds from the 2020 Tokyo Games return, but they offer different levels of firmness to suit personal preferences. Larger beds are provided for Team USA’s track and field throwers.
Security and Safety The Olympic Village has stringent security measures, including a large security perimeter and airport-like screenings. Personal security is allowed entry only at specific times.
Social and Personal Interaction Athletes are encouraged to mingle with others from different countries, fostering camaraderie. The infamous sex ban from the Tokyo Games has been lifted, with condoms readily available.
Resources and Amenities Team USA provides extensive resources, including a sports med clinic, athlete resource center, strength and conditioning space, and mental health support. There are also communal bikes and electric shuttles for transportation within the village.
Dietary Needs The dining hall offers diverse food options, and specific dietary products can be shipped to the village.
Optional Village Stay Staying in the Olympic Village is optional. Teams like USA Basketball choose alternative accommodations but must handle their own logistics.
In essence, these rules aim to create a safe, healthy, and high-performance environment for athletes competing in the Olympic Games.
