Honoring 9/11: Remembrance Ceremonies Across Maryland, D.C., and Virginia

As the nation commemorates the 23rd anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, communities across Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia gather to honor the victims, first responders, and heroes of that day. The ceremonies highlight a shared commitment to remembrance, resilience, and unity.

In Washington, D.C., a 9/11 Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund on 444 E Street, NW, recognizing the dedication and sacrifice of law enforcement officers. Earlier in the day, over 1,300 volunteers will join forces at Union Market’s Dock5 to pack 367,500 non-perishable meals starting at 9 a.m., a tribute to the spirit of service that rose from the tragedy. The Pentagon will also host its iconic flag unfurling, though the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial will be closed to the public.

In Virginia, remembrance events start early. Arlington County will host a wreath-laying ceremony at the Ellen M. Bozman County Government Center at 9:30 a.m., with a moment of silence at 9:37 a.m. to honor the 184 lives lost at the Pentagon. Leesburg’s Freedom Park will hold its own ceremony at 8:30 a.m., led by Mayor Kelly Burk and Town Council members. Volunteers with the nonprofit "Carry The Load" will gather at 9 a.m. to clean and beautify headstones at Alexandria National Cemetery. In Manassas, the Northern Virginia Veterans Association will hold a tribute at 3 p.m. at the Manassas Museum Lawn. George Mason University will also hold its annual 9/11 Day of Service from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In Maryland, the Anne Arundel County Fire and Police Departments will host a memorial ceremony and wreath-laying at 9 a.m. in Millersville. In Annapolis, the U.S. Naval Academy's Brigade of Midshipmen will begin a "9/11 Remembrance Run" at 8:46 a.m. Meanwhile, National Harbor will hold a special event at 5 p.m., honoring first responders with a dinner, free rides on the Capital Wheel, and a performance by the U.S. Navy Band.
