In honor of National Sandwich Day on Nov. 3, a survey of 2,000 Americans has highlighted the nation’s favorite sandwiches and the unique ways people enjoy them. Commissioned by Buddig and conducted by Talker Research, the poll found grilled cheese topping the list (42%), followed by chicken (40%) and turkey (30%) sandwiches. Other popular picks include ham (27%), tuna (24%), and PB&J (21%).
With sandwiches making up about 30% of the average American diet, it's no surprise that nearly half (46%) claim they could live on sandwiches alone. Americans eat around six sandwiches a week, spending an average of 10 minutes crafting their creations. And while 58% are “sandwich pragmatists” who prioritize speed over perfection, 42% consider themselves “sandwich chefs,” insisting on the ideal mix of ingredients to get the perfect bite.
Quality ingredients make all the difference: 64% said high-quality meat is essential, 55% prioritize airy bread, and 54% believe the right condiments are key. Even with grocery prices climbing, 40% of respondents have adapted by using fewer ingredients. Ben Buddig, a fourth-generation owner at Carl Buddig and Company, emphasized that their lunchmeat options cater to families looking to save while still enjoying protein-rich meals.
The survey also reveals that most Americans love toasted sandwiches, with 68% opting to toast their bread, and triangle cuts are a favorite for the presentation. Interestingly, those who prefer toasted sandwiches tend to eat more of them.
And when it comes to flavor, creativity abounds! While 30% have a secret sandwich recipe, others add unique touches like chips for crunch, marinated meats, or unexpected ingredients like jalapeno jelly and cinnamon. For true sandwich fans, there’s no limit to how much they can elevate this beloved classic.
