Dial-A-Carol: Real People, Real Singing, Real Holiday Cheer

Looking to spread some holiday joy or hear your favorite carol sung live? Look no further than Dial-A-Carol – a beloved tradition where student volunteers dedicate their finals week to singing holiday songs for anyone, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, for one magical week. And yes, it’s absolutely free!

What Is Dial-A-Carol?

Founded in 1960 and hosted by Snyder Hall at the University of Illinois, Dial-A-Carol is the longest-running tradition in University Housing. For one week only, callers can request any holiday song, and volunteers will do their best to sing their hearts out. No recordings here – it’s all live, all real, and all about spreading joy.

Who’s Singing?

Students, faculty, staff, and community members come together to make this heartwarming event possible. With a songbook full of classics and a willingness to look up even the most obscure tunes, these cheerful carolers are ready for any request.

How Can You Join?

  • Want to listen? Call in at 217-332-1882 anytime between 12:01 a.m. on December 12 and 11:59 p.m. on December 18. Lines are open 24/7, but if you can’t get through, don’t give up! Multiple lines are available, and patience is part of the holiday magic.
  • Interested in singing? If you’re a student, sign up to volunteer and join the fun!

Make It Global

Dial-A-Carol receives calls from all over the world, and organizers aim to reach every U.S. state and as many countries as possible. If you enjoy the experience, share it with friends, family, and co-workers. Help this tradition go viral and keep the jingle bells ringing!
