As the heat index is set to soar above 100 degrees this weekend, local governments across the D.C. region are transforming various public spaces into cooling centers. These centers provide a much-needed refuge for those without access to a cool environment.
One such cooling center is the Rollingcrest-Chillum Community Center in Chillum, Maryland. Here, visitors can enjoy arcade games or have a leisurely lunch in a cool, air-conditioned space.
“We are a cooling site for everybody,” said Diahann Carolyn Norris, the assistant facility director at Rollingcrest. She explained that after a simple registration process at the front desk, people are welcome to stay as long as they need during operating hours.
Prince George’s County’s Department of Parks and Recreation has opened 22 cooling centers across the county for the summer months. These centers are available not just during extreme heat but throughout the season. “Safety is our priority,” said Jennifer Munoz, the department’s Latino and media engagement specialist. “We want people to stay cool with these extreme temperatures we are experiencing.”
In addition to community centers, cooling centers are also available at various county libraries.
