Fairfax County 5th Graders Help New Students Feel at Home

Starting at a new school can be tough, but fifth graders at Mason Crest Elementary in Annandale, Virginia, are making the transition easier. Through the “Tiger Team” program, these students welcome newcomers, offering tours and answering questions about school life.

A key part of the program is the Tiger Team Mailbox, where new students can drop off letters with concerns or questions. Fifth graders, easily recognizable in red shirts that say “welcome” in multiple languages, help their peers adjust by sharing tips on everything from school clubs to navigating the library.

With a school mobility rate of over 21%, Mason Crest sees a high number of students coming and going. Teacher Ellyn Pearson helped start the initiative to ensure every new student feels included, whether they’re from a military family or moving from another country.

Beyond helping others, the program builds leadership skills for the fifth graders. “They’re learning how to be welcoming as they enter middle school and beyond,” said teacher Monica Buckhorn.

Students like Joey Vide and Larken Gilbert go the extra mile by waving and checking in with their new classmates, making sure they feel seen and valued.

For many newcomers, a simple connection—like seeing their home country’s flag in the gym—makes a big difference. Thanks to the Tiger Team, new students at Mason Crest aren’t just adjusting; they’re finding a place where they belong.
