Super Sue: Spreading Warmth One Bowl of Soup at a Time

For the past five years, Sue Clark has been ladling out kindness—literally. Known as the “Soup Lady” in her Silver Spring, Maryland community, Clark has made and given away thousands of quarts of soup to neighbors in need.

It all started in 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Wanting to help those struggling, Clark began cooking batch after batch of homemade soup. Soon, friends and neighbors pitched in—donating ingredients, delivering meals, and turning her kitchen into a hub of community care.

This past Thanksgiving, Clark cooked so many turkey carcasses for broth that her kitchen walls changed color. “I did so much my boyfriend had to repaint the walls,” she joked.

But for Clark, every pot of soup is about more than just a meal. Having experienced deep personal loss—losing her mother as a teenager and her husband unexpectedly years later—she knows the power of comfort food.

“People were there for me, and I just want to be there for others,” Clark said. “I think they know love is in the soup.”

Thanks to her dedication, hundreds of people have felt that love in the form of a warm, homemade bowl. And for Clark, that’s more than enough reward.
