MAKE YOUR MONDAY: A Refuge for Survivors of Abuse and Their Pets

In Maryland, there’s a new campaign making a world of difference for people escaping domestic violence—and for their pets, too. It’s called Pets Are Family Too, and the whole idea is simple: no survivor should ever have to choose between their safety and the animals they love.

The sad truth is, abusers often use pets as leverage, threatening to harm them if a partner tries to leave. That fear keeps a lot of people trapped in dangerous homes. And the reality is, only about a quarter of domestic violence shelters nationwide can take in pets, so even when someone is ready to go, they might not know what to do with their dog or cat.

That’s where this campaign comes in. With new funding, the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence is working with shelters and service providers in places like Cecil, Washington, and Harford counties. They’re setting up foster programs, boarding options, and partnerships with pet-friendly hotels so survivors don’t have to leave their animals behind.

It’s not just about logistics—it’s about peace of mind. Knowing their pet will be safe makes it easier for someone to take that brave step toward freedom. And in the middle of such a tough journey, being able to keep that bond with a furry family member can mean comfort, healing, and hope.
