A first grader's frustrations.
Every day it's a struggle to get Donato to sit through virtual school without an emotional outburst. He hates writing because it requires too much focus for his ADHD brain. Lately, when he tells me he can't think of anything to write about (even after I've given him several ideas), I ask him to write what he's feeling. I find it helps calm him down. He has an amazing teacher who makes him feel "safe" enough to share his thoughts.
Here's what he wrote recently...
"I feel sad because I am sad and school is a waste of time!! And I sit down and do nothing!!! School would be better if I went there!!!!"
Yes, it breaks my heart to read it...but I'm also proud of him for being able to express his feelings. As parents, it is our job to give our kids coping skills to deal with all of life's curveballs. God willing, he will come out of all this stronger than ever.
And to all you parents...stop being hard on yourselves. You are doing the best you can. We're not always going to get it right...but we can use every setback as a life lesson for our kids.
