Study: Exercise Lowers Risk Of Breast Cancer

We know how important exercise is for our physical and mental health, but it turns out, it may also be the key to lowering the risk of developing breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so it’s a good time to talk about what we can do to protect ourselves and our tatas. Research has shown that regular workouts can make a big difference with the chance of getting breast cancer.

The Cleveland Clinic highlights a study that finds increasing workouts and decreasing body fat lowers the risk of breast cancer for postmenopausal women. Their 12-month study’s findings show that 300-minutes a week of moderate-to-vigorous exercise is more effective than 150 minutes a week in reducing fat for these women. The Cleveland Clinic explains, “the reduction in body fat may play a role in reducing breast cancer risk.”

  • And the National Cancer Institute explains that physically active women were able to lower their risk of breast cancer by 12 to 21% compared to the least physically active women, based on findings of a meta-analysis of 38 different studies.
  • According to the Mayo Clinic nutrition may also help lower the risk of breast cancer, especially the Mediterranean diet. They explain that women who follow the mostly plant-based eating plan and supplement it with extra-virgin olive oil and mixed nuts might have “a reduced risk for breast cancer.”
