The first of two documentaries about the life of Whitney Houston will make its debut next month at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival.
Filmmaker Nick Broomfield shot the movie Whitney: Can I Be Me without the involvement of the Houston family. The English documentarian has made films about musicians in the past, focusing on rappers (Biggie & Tupac) and grunge (Kurt & Courtney). He’s also aimed the camera at Sarah Palin, Heidi Fleiss, Lily Tomlin, the war in Iraq, migrant laborers and the fall of apartheid in South Africa.
The biopic has its Tribeca premiere on April 26 - and is expected to air on Showtime later this year.
Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald is creating the other Whitney project, this one with the family’s cooperation and fully authorized by the Houston estate.
