Both Disney and Sony are working on live-action versions of Mulan. But don’t expect to hear “Reflection” (above) or “I’ll Make a Man Out of You.” Neither production may feature songs from the 1998 film.
Moviefone just published an interview with Niki Caro, who is directing the upcoming version of Mulan for Disney (she also did films like Whale Rider and The Zookeeper’s Wife). And Caro said that, as of now, there are no songs planned in the movie – as she put it, “much to the horror of my children.” Instead it will be “a big, girly martial arts epic…extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving.”
So it may not be like Beauty and the Beast all over again.
As for the Sony production, Cinemablend reports it will be filmed in China with mainly Chinese actors. If there’s music, they won’t have the rights to the Disney songs. But the legend of Hua Mulan dates back to the fifth century – so nobody has a monopoly on the story line.
