If you haven’t heard about “Thirteen Reasons Why,” your kids surely have. Based on a book of the same name by Jay Asher, it’s now a new Netflix show that involves a high school student who commits suicide and leaves behind a collection of cassette tapes as to why. On tape, the character ‘Hannah’ explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life.
While detractors – including psychologists – say the show is giving kids bad ideas by “glamorizing suicide,” supporters say the intention is the opposite. They also say that the show gives a shockingly accurate look at the life of American teens. A writer of the show has also defended the series in an op-ed for “Vanity Fair”, saying it offers "hope to young people, letting them know that they are not alone."
Why is this being discussed now? The show is said to be up for – and getting – renewed. Meanwhile, the debate continues.
