Get set to pay more for shipping holiday packages

Here’s your six-month notice: it will cost you more to ship holiday gifts via UPS.

UPS let us know yesterday that they going to start charging extra fees during the peak holiday season for home-delivered packages. The company said it’s a way to fight rising costs. A 27-cent charge will be added to ground service packages between November 19th and December 2nd and again between December 17th and December 23rd. Heavy packages and those delivered by two-day air will see a 97-cent surcharge right before Christmas.

The ripple effect is that retailers like Amazon and Walmart have to decide if they will suck up the costs or pass them to customers.

This gives us plenty of lead time to plan. Is early shipping in our cards?
