Photos of our trip to Mardi Gras

So, back in January, I turned the BIG 5-0. I had always wanted to go to Mardi Gras in New Orleans...to experience it just once, so John planned a suprise trip for us!

We got lots of tips from friends who know New Orleans well...where to go, what to see, what to eat, etc. I gotta say, the oysters at Royal House were HUGE! And the chargrilled oysters they serve were UH-MAZE-ING! I had a bowl of gumbo every single day and was most impressed with the gumbo at House Of Blues.

We did a couple of tours...about ghosts, witches, voodoo, etc. We toured the St. Louis Cemetary #1, which was very interesting. We learned about "voodoo queen" Marie Laveau. We took a river cruise on a steamboat but sadly, right as we set sail, a storm blew in, and we spent the entire trip huddled inside a small bar with about 50 other passengers.

For Fat Tuesday, we knew we wanted to have a balcony view so we made reservations at Bourbon Cowboy. It was worth the price alone of not having to stand in line for an hour to use the restroom! Finding a public bathroom during Mardi Gras is tough if you're not a customer at a bar or restaurant.

I would say the highlight of the trip for me was the great food, the fun people we met, and the chance to go to the butterfly arboretum in New Orleans...I could have stayed there ALL DAY LONG!
