Alanis Morissette reveals her stuggles with post-partum depression

Alanis Morissette is pregnant for the third time at 45 years old -- and unlike the first two times, she's not allowing herself to let postpartum depression take her and her family by surprise.

In a Self magazine cover story, Morissette has opened up about how she intends to be proactive this time around. That wasn't the case during her first two pregnancies -- she waited over a year after the first and four months after the second before getting help and letting others know. She says she's already informing friends and family that there's a good possibility that she'll be in a dark place after she gives birth.

In fact, Morissette has gone as far as to tell people that that they shouldn't necessarily believe her at first if she says she OK. And she feels that she herself will "be a lot more attuned to what's going on, because depression has a way of taking away self-perception."

The article has proven to be a jumping off point for discussions of how to treat postpartum depression, with segments devoted to her revelations having aired Tuesday on the Today show and Good Morning, America.
