I was anxiously looking forward to seeing the "Capitol 4th" fireworks last night. Every year the DC display is incredible and this year, the spectacle was said to be the biggest show ever...10 times more impressive than normal. A price tag of $750,000. That's ALOT of money for a fireworks display.
So, yeah, I got bummed out last night as I sat in my recliner, waiting for the show to start. Oh, by the way...MAJOR shoutout to the producers of the 4th concert...and John Stamos, you slayed it...the concert was funny and poignant and just so darn good that I cried - more than once. What an honor to be a resident of the DC metro area - I always say that the 4th in the Nation's Capitol is my favorite time of year here.
Ok, so...as I was watching the fireworks, I was like...um, is it just me, or my tv? 'Cause things just didn't look "right". I didn't know if it was cloud cover or what but...definitely didn't look normal to me. I mentioned this on Facebook and several of my friends had the answer:
Dana Staples Pettenati The meteorologists on Channel 4 said it was the cooler air in the atmosphere not allowing the smoke to escape because of the very warm air on ground level.
Zane Rettstatt Yep the warmer air was lower than usual, but at the same time, the winds were coming from the west so Virginia could see it clear.
Tammy Kelch Embrey Yep any year that it is super humid the smoke from the fireworks will just hang in the air and by the end of the show they really obscure the fireworks going off from being seen.
And here's a story from our friends at NBC4 that explains it, too.
