Saluting local women-owned businesses on this International Women's Day!

On this International Women's Day, here's a look at some businesses in the DMV founded and operated by women!

The Lovely Lady Boutique in NW DC was selling high-end women's apparel before the pandemic hit...when it did, mother-daughter team Ethel and Raynette Sanders had to figure what to do for their business to survive. They began making Sippin' Safe masks with a patch that allows you to insert a straw. Their idea took off and their doors remain open.

Milk Bar in Logan Circle serves up yummy sweet treats. Christina Tosi opened Milk Bar...she's a 2-time James Beard Award winner and has been a judge on "MasterChef" on FOX.

Jeweler Ann Hand began making patriotic pieces in a cottage in her garden over 30 years ago. She has a very popular shop in Georgetown and an online store. She's sold jewelry to Laura Bush, Lady Bird Johnson, and Nancy Reagan. Nancy Pelosi also wears one of Ann's pins.

And finally, Devin Cook and Justine Carlisle...7 months ago, they decided to take a chance on opening a hair salon during a pandemic. Blackbird Salon on Virginia Avenue now employs 11 other stylists.
