Wordle's been bought! Will it continue to be free to play it?

Wordle, the web-based word game everyone seems obsessed with at the moment, has been purchased by The New York Times Company for a price "in the low seven figures," the Times announced Monday.

The game, in which players get six attempts to guess a five-letter word, was created by Brooklyn, New York software engineer Josh Wardle. Initially, the game will still be available for free to new and current players, but it's unclear about the future.

The Times said the purchase is part their continued effort to increase their digital subscriptions to 10 million by 2025 by offering games, such as crosswords and Spelling Bee. (The New York Times)

Wordle really has become a sensation. It debuted in October and had only 90 users on November 1st, but now has millions of players!
