I am a rule follower, so if the pediatrician said not to do it, I didn't do it. I never gave Eleanor milk, nor did I give her juice before she was one. Eleanor LOVES apple juice, but I also know it's horrible for her teeth because it's just concentrated sugar. It's also bad for diaper rash (did you know that? The things you learn when you talk to other moms). Yes, I give my child treats and juice, but I do it sparingly, and trust her pediatrician.
