American City Diner was a DC landmark. I remember looking for it as a kid to map how far down Connecticut Avenue I was on family car rides into DC. I wanted to have a birthday party there and watch 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' on their outdoor porch which they heated and enclosed with tarps in the colder months. Was the food all that good? To be honest, no, but it was as much a part of DC as Marilyn Monroe's mural a little farther south on Connecticut Avenue. American City Diner closed its doors July of 2018, and now, over a year later we learn that it will become a sidekick of Sidekick bakery, an off shoot of the Ted's Bulletin chain. I don't know about you, but the last thing I wanted to see in such an iconic building was another chain. Bummer.
