You’ve probably heard of “tech neck,” which is a painful condition caused by slumping over devices for hours, leading the neck to lose its natural curve. It used to be more common in older dentists and the like who hunched over for work for many years, but these days it’s much more common in younger folks who are always on their phones and tablets. Well, now new moms are suffering from something similar: “breast neck.”
Sounds awful, but what is it? Breast neck is basically the twinges, tightness, and numbness moms start feeling when their arm has been in the same position and they’re hunched over baby while breastfeeding many, many times a day. Because sometimes that sweet baby will only nurse when your arm is at a 90-degree angle and she may be comfy, but mama definitely is not.
The good news is that breast neck can be treated with some pain relieving stretches. Moving those arms and relaxing the neck and shoulders for a change really helps. And pillows are a nursing mom’s best friend, whether it’s a Boppy or a throw pillow from the couch, getting support to prop baby up so the neck and arms don’t have to do all the work is a game-changer.
