Target & American Greetings Apologize For "Baby Daddy" Cards!

The controversy first began a couple of weeks ago, when a Target shopper named Takeisha Saunders shared a picture of a card with an African American couple on the cover that read “Baby Daddy.” While the inside of the card did refer to the man as a “husband” and “father,” Takeisha and many others weren’t having it. “You CANNOT be serious Target!!!!,” she wrote on Facebook. “Really!!!?!!!!? This was the only Father’s Day card that featured a black couple!!!!!!”

Others chimed in on social media, with one person noting it was “an insult to black fathers and a slap in the face to the African-American community as a whole,” while another added, “What in the microagression racism is this @target

Well, now both Target, and the card’s maker American Greetings has responded. Target apologized and pulled the card off the shelves. "We want all guests to feel welcomed and respected when they shop at Target," Joshua Thomas, a spokesperson for Target, tells Fox News. "We were made aware of some concerns about this card last week and are working with our vendor to have it removed from Target stores.”

As for American Greetings they said in a statement, "This particular card was created for, and addressed to, a loving husband — which the inside copy makes clear. However, we now see that the front page, taken out of context, can communicate an unintentional meaning that we are strongly against perpetuating and is not consistent with our company purpose and values,” adding, “We should do better in the future, and we will. We have notified our store merchandisers to remove the card from the shelves and apologize for any offense we’ve caused."
