Most People Have Bad Hand Hygiene!

National Handshake Day is coming up and while a handshake may seem like an innocent way to say hello or goodbye to someone, they could actually be pretty dangerous. Why? Well, it turns out a lot of us aren’t practicing good hand hygiene habits, which means that little handshake could be spreading some big germs.

A recent poll of 1,000 Americans reveals just how bad our hand hygiene really is. For example, 43% of people who pick or blow their nose don’t always wash their hands afterwards, and Staph is commonly found in the nose. What’s more, 56% don’t always wash their hands after covering their mouths when they cough, which could pass on serious respiratory illnesses, and 18% of people don’t always wash their hands after going to the bathroom, and as little as one gram of feces can contain one trillion germs.

All of this could be the reason why a lot of people go out of their way to avoid shaking hands with people. The poll finds that nearly half of all people won’t shake hands with others to avoid germs, and some have found unique ways to avoid that handshake.

Creative ways to avoid a handshake include:

  • Acting like they are looking for something in their purse

  • Pretending to be sick themselves by faking a cough

  • Holding their breath and walking away from people who are sick

  • Pretending to receive a phone call to avoid the greeting

  • Using an elbow to greet

  • Standing away from someone or ignoring them
