Is the Pay Gap Widening?

The pay gap between what men and women make is worse than census data indicates. A new survey claims that women earn 49 cents compared to every dollar men earn. Economists had estimated that women earned about 80 percent of what men earned, but that number is based on census data.

The Institute for Women's Policy Research said that data does not account for part-time workers and those who take time off from work, which women do more than men. More than four of ten women step back from the workplace for at least a year usually to take care of children.

Women who leave the workforce for at least a year earn 39 percent less than women who remain in the workforce. The study says things are getting better. The earnings and participation by women has increased since the 1960s.
