Local Cheerleading Team Heading To The World Cheerleading Championships!

A Montgomery County Special Olympics cheerleading team has been chosen to represent the United States in the inaugural world championship event for Special Olympics Cheerleading.

The JOY Supernovas will travel to Orlando in a few weeks for the big event, which is set to be held April 24-26.

The team is made up of 17 athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities, ranging in age from 13 to 30. Septoff said they inspire her every single day.

This year, for the first time ever, the World Cheerleading Championships now include a Special Olympics Division – and the JOY Supernovas have been selected to represent the United States.

The team will compete against more than 80 other countries.

The team is now working to raise money to cover expenses for uniforms, competition fees, lodging, and meals for the trip to Orlando.

“To get everyone there with a parent – it’s costly. And so our goal is to raise close to $12,000, and we are halfway there,” said Septoff.
