More Teens Are on the Road Than Ever Before

If you’re someone who fears a teen driver, there’s some startling new statistics that may make you worry about ever getting behind a wheel again.

A new AAA survey finds…

  • More than 60.3% of teens are getting their driver’s license before they turn 18.
  • That’s number is an 11% increase from 2012.
  • What’s more, 40.8% got their license before they hit 16.
  • The age teens get their license does depend on where they live.
  • Only 49.8% of teens in big cities get their license before 18, while two-thirds of those in less urbanized areas do.
  • 55% of teens in the Midwest get their license before 16, while 70% get it before 18.
  • 32.2% of teens in the West, and 22.3% in the Northeast get their license before 16, while 56% of those in the Northeast and 48% of those in the West get it before 18.

As for why some teens wait until their 18, reasons given include:

  • Nervous about driving (68.4%)
  • They could do everything they needed without driving (52.6%)
  • Driving was too expensive (33.3%)
  • Too busy to get a license (28.9%)
  • Family members did not have time to help them get their license (20.5%)

So, why should we worry about these teen drivers? Well, according to the AAA, new teen drivers, especially those 16 to 17, are three times as likely to be involved in a deadly crash than an adult.
