A lot of people will be headed to the airport for Thanksgiving this week, and some folks may actually be bringing their favorite Thanksgiving dishes along with them. But that begs the question – can you bring those Thanksgiving dishes on the plane with you? Well, the TSA is here to help.
The TSA’s Twitter feed @askTSA is filled with questions about traveling with food this holiday season, along with all the answers you need. Thanksgiving food travel tips include:
- As a general rule, solid foods like pies, cakes, stuffing mix and casseroles can go in a carry-on bag.
- While anything liquid, like gravy, cranberry sauce, wine, jam and preserves should be packed in checked luggage.
- Now if you’re someone who is planning to schlep a whole turkey with you, here’s the good news – you can pack it in your carry-on, as long as you have room.
- Wondering if you can bring frozen food in your carry-on? Well, the answer is yes. Frozen spreadable food and ice packs are allowed in a catry-on or checked bag, but if it’s in your carry-on, it can only exceed the 3-point-4 ounce rule if it’s completely frozen. Even if it’s slightly melted you won’t get it through TSA.
- Gooey pies like blueberry or pecan are okay, and not subject to liquid rules.
- Looking to bring anything creamy with you, it’s gonna have to be checked. Creamy foods are subject to the same 3-point-4 ounce or less rules as any other liquid
