We’ve come a long way since the days when TV shows had to show married couples sleeping in separate twin beds, but it seems a lot of modern spouses are opting for that old-school idea. Some couples today decide to swap their shared bed for two separate ones to help them get better sleep and there are more of them doing it than you may realize. A survey from the National Sleep Foundation finds that nearly one in four married couples sleep apart.
So what makes a couple try sleeping separately? Psychologist Jill Lankler says they’re losing sleep and they’re willing to try options to see what helps. Some spouses work different schedules, others may snore, and both of these could wake their partners up, so they try a nighttime split in an effort to catch as many ZZZs as possible.
As appealing as it may be to get a full night of uninterrupted sleep by snoozing away from your partner, some couples fear that their sex life may take a hit if they don’t sleep in the same bed. But Lankler says it won’t ruin anything more than having a TV in a shared bedroom and that sleeping in separate beds can actually give sex lives a boost because couples have to be intentional about being intimate. “You actually get to carve out time,” she explains. And if you’re not exhausted, that’s a whole lot easier.
