Sorry! That Glass of Wine Is Not Helping You Sleep

Do you reach for a glass of wine or two before bed when you have trouble falling asleep? Lots of people do because they think the alcohol will ease their anxiety and make them feel relaxed so they can wind down. But that seemingly innocent nightcap may not actually help you get the quality sleep you need.

“Alcohol might make it easier to initially fall asleep, but it can have a negative impact on the overall quantity and efficiency of sleep,” explains psychiatrist and neurologist Julia Samton.

The drinks may help you drift off faster, but alcohol-induced sleep isn’t as refreshing because you’re not getting the deep sleep you need. Drinking before bed can throw off the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle and mess with our rest that night and even affect sleep quality in the nights that follow, leaving you exhausted and ready to reach for another drink. And that’s a cycle we definitely don’t want to be in.
