Most People Have a Family Heirloom That Is Decades Old

One person’s junk is another one’s family treasure, and it seems there are plenty of folks holding on to important family heirlooms for quite a while. 

A study conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Shinola, finds;

  • 42% of Americans have a cherished family heirloom that’s over 50 years old.
  • 49% of those polled say a family heirloom is their most prized possession.
  • Other prized possessions include:
    • Family photos (65%)
    • Wedding ring (56%)
    • Piece of jewelry (54%)
    • Engagement ring (50%)
    • Computer laptop (49%)
    • Car (44%)
    • Wedding dress (41%)
    • Child’s memory box (39%)

Many of these heirlooms are passed down from generation to generation.

  • In fact, the survey finds on average people start asking about things they want to be passed down when they turn 24.
  • The top items people want passed down include:
    • Engagement ring (32%)
    • Piece of jewelry (29%)
    • Wedding ring (26%)
    • Watch (26%)
    • Wedding dress (25%)
    • Wedding veil (19%)
    • Family home (18%)
    • Kitchen item (17%)
    • Suit (16%)
    • Item of clothing (14%)
