When Coronavirus hit hard earlier this year, it was near impossible to find the essentials you needed at stores. Healthcare workers, spending long hours on the front lines with little time to shop, were especially in need. Virginia ICU nurse and mother of two, Stacy Mason remembers seeing her co-workers having trouble finding items they needed for their families and had a good idea. She started a “Take What You Need” pantry, where her colleagues could share any extras they had with other staff.
The pantry was such a success that Mason expanded the resource to include all of the hospital’s workers. Now she’s being recognized by her community as a Hometown Hero of Fauquier County. The pantry has had a big impact on hospital employees’ lives. “We know that many of our associates’ families are feeling the economic impacts of coronavirus,”Mary Washington Healthcare posts on Facebook, “and it’s nurses like Stacy Mason who demonstrate why 2020 is the Year of the Nurse.”
