The Average Age Parents Stop Reading Their Kids Bedtime Stories

One of the more fun things about being a parent is getting to read to your child at bedtime, even if you do have to read the same book over and over again. And for some parents, they love it so much they never want it to stop.

The study, commissioned by Wonderbly, found;

  • The average parent reads or tells their children bedtime stories until the age of eight.
  • 10% actually kept up the bedtime story tradition until their child was 13 or older.
  • 11% stopped when their kid was only three or four.
  • 20% of parents started reading to their child before they were even born.
  • 15% started reading to them from the moment they arrived.
  • 75% of parents say they wished they would never have to stop reading or telling their kids bedtime stories.
  • While 23% say they don’t ever plan to stop.
  • 86% of parents simply love reading or telling a story to their kid when they put them to bed.
  • 36% say it’s because it’s the most quality time they have with their children.
  • 80% say bedtime is one of the best things about being a parent.
  • 41% of parents say they prefer to read stories to their children, while 21% will create stories catered to their child.
  • 47% of those who make up their own stories say it’s more fun.
  • 50% say it gives them a chance to personalize their tales.

The survey notes that the average parent will spend just under 15 minutes reading books or telling stories to their kids at bedtime, which is about one hour and 17 minutes each week.
