American's Biggest Fear This Holiday Season: Porch Pirates

A lot of us will be relying on online shopping for the holidays this year, and while that certainly may be easier, and safer, than going to the store, it does bring some added worries, specifically porch pirates.

A new survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of SimpliSafe,

  • 64% of Americans are worried about holiday packages sent to loved ones being stolen by porch pirates.
  • And it’s no wonder they’re worried, with 47% already victims of such pirates.
  • The average victim has lost $175.05 in stolen packages, and has had three packages stolen during quarantine.
  • 80% of people say having a package stolen would bring down their holiday cheer.
  • Another three-quarters say porch pirate are the worst thing about the holidays.
  • Because of their fears, 72% of people say they vigilantly check delivery updates when ordering something online.
  • And it’s understandable why folks would be concerned, considering 52% of people plan to spend more online this year than in the past.
  • Almost half of folks polled would spend twice the price for something in-store if it meant not having to worry about it arriving safely at their home.

Now it usually isn’t hard to get a replacement when something is stolen, but for some people those stolen gifts were quite meaningful.

  • The poll asked folks to share the most meaningful gifts that were stolen, and they include:
    • A baby gift for my sister.
    • A birthday gift for my granddaughter.
    • A piece of medical equipment. It took many months to get my insurance to approve the medical equipment.
    • A part for my water heater that stopped working and we had no hot water for three weeks waiting for the part twice.
    • An old family heirloom that was mailed to me from my mom.
    • College textbooks for online learning.
    • My high blood pressure medication.
    • Personal letters
