One Airport Is Testing Out Virtual Queuing for TSA

Thanks to vaccines, people are starting to travel again, which means the return of TSA lines at airports. But what if you could reserve a spot on that line and not have to wait for hours? Well, one airport in the U.S. is testing out that idea right now.

Sea-Tac airport in Washington State just launched a new program called called SEA Spot Saver, which will allow “virtual queuing” on the TSA line. The program will be tested through August 31st, but will only be available from 4 am to noon, which is actually the busiest time at the airport.

Virtual reservations will be available at two checkpoints, and those interested in will have two options.

  • Alaska Airlines passengers can sign up for a TSA line spot online up to 24 hours before, or at the terminal. The reservation can be for a group of up to 12 people. They will then get a QR code, to use at a separate line at Checkpoint 5.
  • The second option is for Delta Airlines and all other carriers, although travelers can only book an appointment (for up to 10 people) once they arrive at the terminal, and they will be given an appointment time for Checkpoint 2.
  • In both scenarios, parties will have a 15-minute window to arrive for their appointment.

Once the testing is done officials plan to evaluate it based on customer feedback, usage and efficiency, and if it proves worthy it may be implemented on a larger scale.
