Most Adults Own a Security Blanket or Toy

Many of us had a special toy, blanket, or item that we clung to as a child. Some of us still have them even though we’re grown up. “Refinery 29” got some people to share stories of those treasured safety things they still have and use. Then an expert weighed in.

Dr. Reena Patel, explains that our blankie or teddy bear was a transitional item during childhood that we smelled, touched, or cuddled to help keep stress away. They even helped us sleep better. From a mental health perspective, she says it makes sense that some of us keep those things close even as adults. And...it’s perfectly fine!

Not only does it help keep insomnia and anxiety in check. says Patel, but it turns out, there’s no set age when we have to give our object up, that’s society making the call. That means you never have to part with your blanket or toy.

When some do give up their cherished item to feel like a “real” grownup, they may replace it with a coffee cup, pillow, or another comfort item, so there’s a sensory item in their life. So, break out your blankie and snuggle away. If anyone asks about it, tell them an expert gave the thumbs up!
