The Social Security Administration recently came out with their annual list of the most popular names for 2020, and further analysis of the report reveals the late Kobe Bryant had a huge effect on this year’s list.
- According to the report, the name Kobe, a tribute to a basketball great who died in a helicopter crash in 2020, saw a huge jump in popularity.
- In fact, the name moved from 556 in 2019, to 239 in 2020, the 11thbiggest jump on the boys' list.
- But the increase wasn’t just for boys. While 1,500 boys were given the name Kobe in 2020, there were actually 55 baby girls given the name as well.
- And it wasn’t just Kobe, the name Gianna, inspired by Kobe’s 13-year-old daughter who also died in the crash, saw an increase as well, with 7,826 girls given the name Gianna, jumping from 79 on the list to 12. There were even seven boys given the name Gianna.
- There were also 307 babies given the name Giana with just one “n,” with the name rising from 978 on the list to 868, while Jianna jumped from 1,674 on the list to 850, the third-biggest increase since 2019.
- And the other members of Kobe’s family also inspired baby names.
- Natalia, the name of his oldest daughter, jumped from 103 to 84, Capri, his youngest daughter, jumped from 1293 to 685, Bianka, his third daughter, rose from 453 to 423 and Vanessa, the name of his widow, rose from 270 to 208.
- Even the name Bryant saw an increase in popularity, jumping from 829 to 658, with 393 boys being given the name, and for the first time, five girls getting the moniker.
