Engagement Watches Are the New Engagement Rings

While lots of gals look forward to the day their S.O. puts a ring on their finger and asks them that all important question, there seems to be a new generation of loved up folks who are looking for something other than that big diamond ring.

Apparently there’s a new trend gaining in popularity of couples exchanging watches instead of rings. The global shopping platform Lyst claims in a new report that they are seeing a 42% increase in searches for “couple,” “engagement” and “wedding” watches. “This season, more couples have been forgoing traditional rings as engagement presents, instead opting for gender-neutral watches,” Lyst’s Morgan Le Caer shares.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Ernest Jones also notes the rise in same sex marriages could be the reason for the shift from rings. “With the rise of same-sex marriages, we're also seeing many men choose watches for their husbands-to-be over rings to mark this moment too," they share. “A beautiful prestige timepiece is fast becoming as relevant as a diamond ring when it comes to marking the big day in style.”

And judging from social media, lots of folks are totally down with the idea of watches over rings, with hundreds of posts dedicated to the idea.

  • “Here's a thought: Instead of an engagement ring, how about an engagement watch? Make sure I know what time it is,” one person wrote.
  • While another added, “My now wife told me three times she wanted a specific watch instead of an engagement ring so that's what I got her.”
  • And as another noted, “A watch instead of an engagement ring, at least it's useful.”
